Yokote (Japanese: 横手市) is a city on the southeastern part of
Akita Prefecture, in the
Tohoku region in northern
Honshu, Japan. It covers 693 sq km (267 sq mi) and has a population of 97,000 people (2012 estimate). It was created in 1951 and was expanded in 2005 with in annexed the towns of Hiraka, Jumonji, Masuda, Omonogawa, Omori and the villages of Sannai and Taiyu.
Perhaps the best time to visit Yokote is during the Kamakura Festival, held in mid winter. That's when you can see igloo-like abodes made of snow and ice lit from within. During the festival, a local specialities enjoyed is
amazake, a fermented rice beverage which can be alcoholic as well as non alcoholic. Another speciality is the Japanese rice cake, called
mochi, made from glutinous rice.
