St Xavier's Institution, on

George Town, Penang. It honours St. John Baptist (1651-1719, French:
Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle), the founder of the Institute of the Christian Brothers' Schools (Fr:
Fr`res des écoles chrétiennes) and regarded by the Roman Catholic faith as the Patron of Teachers.
Memorials to Jean-Baptiste de La Salle are common in all the educational institutions established by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This particular memorial on the grounds of the St Xavier's Institution was made of cast iron in the early 1940s. When the old St Xavier's building was destroyed during the Second World War, the memorial was relocated to the grounds of the Uplands International School in Pulau Tikus. There it stood for some sixty years.
