St Jean-Baptiste de La Salle Memorial, St Xavier's Institution (20 March 2004)
Jean-Baptiste de La Salle Memorial (GPS: 5.42116, 100.33661) is a monument on the grounds of the St Xavier's Institution, on Farquhar Street, George Town, Penang. It honours St. John Baptist (1651-1719, French: Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle), the founder of the Institute of the Christian Brothers' Schools (Fr: Fr`res des écoles chrétiennes) and regarded by the Roman Catholic faith as the Patron of Teachers.
Memorials to Jean-Baptiste de La Salle are common in all the educational institutions established by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This particular memorial on the grounds of the St Xavier's Institution was made of cast iron in the early 1940s. When the old St Xavier's building was destroyed during the Second World War, the memorial was relocated to the grounds of the Uplands International School in Pulau Tikus. There it stood for some sixty years.

In 2002, the Jean-Baptiste de La Salle Memorial was returned to the grounds of St Xavier's Institution. There, it was installed on a new granite pedestal, built at a cost of RM16,000. Located near the front entrance of the school, the memorial depicts St John Baptist guiding two pupils through their learning.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
