There is a Thai-Style Koay Chiap Stall at the Jelutong Market Mat Dou Yao Dessert Shop, across from the Jelutong Market. I discovered the stall today and decided to give it a try. Although the sign says RM5.00, we were charged RM4 per bowl. The stall is within a stone's throw from the other, bigger koay chiap stall, which is at Kedai Makanan Seong Huat.
That was the stall that we usually patronize. However, having tried the Thai-style Koay Chiap, I find that it is quite good. I like the aroma of the coriander. Also, this koay chiap comes with quite big chunks of meat, so it was to me quite ho1liau33 .
The stall also sells Thai-style pork-leg rice. I look forward to trying it.
Updates
28 June, 2014: We returned to the Koay Chiap stall, this time because we want to order the Thai-style pork-leg rice. It costs just RM8.00 for two persons, and this is how it looks like.
Thai-style pork-leg (28 June 2014)
It looks good, its taste is not too bad, but it is not sufficiently ho1 liau3. I mean, a meal for two persons does not have enough ingredients to fill two persons. There is only half an egg - how do you share that, and what if I had ordered only for one person? Also, I find the pig trotters lacking in meat. Some have nothing but bones. I finished much of my rice accompanied by nothing but the soup.
I have taken Thai-style pork-leg rice before, in Penang as well as in Thailand, and my experience elsewhere was a lot better. So much for all the high expectation, but this dish was a failure and I would not be ordering it again from this stall.
After eating this, I still did not feel sufficiently full. I saw a stall in front of the coffee shop saying "Roti B.B." I thought it was roti babi, but it turned out to be some sort of fusion grilled bread. It came with a number of fillings, and in that eeny meeny miny moe moment, I made the wrong choice of choosing the bread with ... of all things, salted fish! (But then again, there probably is no right choice with this stall.)
Well, it was not just salted fish inside the bread, there's also onions. But my biggest complaint was that, despite the bread having been grilled until the outside was charred, the inside filling was icy cold. Yes, icy cold, like it just came out of the freezer after being there the whole night. My wife took a bite of it and was done with it. (She was very sensitive with food. If something didn't agree with her, she would feel unwell the rest of the day.) I hate to waste food, so I finished it as much as I can. But I tell you, this thing is so lousy it should not be sold in the first place.
Yes, I want every hawker to have an opportunity to make a living, and if I am given good food, I would definitely rave about it. But if you sell me something unpalatable, I have to describe it as it is.
Once regarded as the working-class sister to George Town, now Jelutong has developed into a major residential neighbourhood, and home to a lot of good hawker food. Let the food lovers at Hawker Food Planet show you what's good to eat there.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
