Jerejak tuberculosis ward (29 February 2004)
Jerejak Tuberculosis Hospital (GPS: 5.30706, 100.31383) is a hospital set up during the British administration. Established in 1930, it was part of the larger health quarantine centre that was set up at various sites around
Pulau Jerejak.
The tuberculosis wards were built on the southeastern part of the island. This came about at the end of the Second World War, when the disease became widespread across then Malaya. As the disease was highly contagious and had a very high mortality rate - higher even than leprosy, which is also contained in Jerejak from 1871 to 1969 - Pulau Jerejak was also chosen as the site for the tuberculosis sanatorium.
