Jinggangshan Penang Hill Temple (1 November 2014)
Jinggangshan Penang Hill Temple (GPS: 5.41276, 100.2786; Traditional Chinese: 金剛山檳城禪林, Simplified Chinese: 金刚山槟城禅林) is a Buddhist temple at the foot of
Penang Hill, in Air Itam, Penang. It is located on the slopes of the hilly
Jalan Pokok Ceri.
Nearest the roadside is a building that looks like a reception hall of Jinggangshan Penang Hill Temple. Next to it, and on a slightly higher ground, is the main portion of the temple, which is a hall or pavilion with a standing Buddha image. The approach to the hall has a big arch with the name of the temple, Jinggangshan. As you climb up the stairs towards the hall, you pass by a large collection of gilded pagodas, or stupas, lining the slope towards the hall.
The main hall has a single statue of a standing Buddha. Hanging down from above are large parasols-like lampshades and banners. The far-end walls are lined with numerous Buddha images.
From the main hall, a path winds off to the side. It goes to an area with a jumble of more stupas. These are arranged or perhaps scattered in a somewhat loose fashion among the boulders. Some of these stupas are topped with Buddha images. The steps wind their way in between the stupas. I am not sure of the intention, perhaps the purpose of the path around the stupas is for devotees to contemplate as they stand in the midst of the stupas. Among these, there appears to be a main stupa, or pagoda, with incricate pattern painted in gold.
