Kim of K+M Eco Farm House with some of the organically grown produce at the Straits Quay Farmer's Market. (19 June 2016)
K+M Eco Farm House is an organic farm in Machang Bubok, Bukit Mertajam. It was established by Kim and Michael, hence K+M, a couple of retirees who have decided to make Penang their home, since Kim was born and grew up here. They run the farm with the assistance of a local helper, and occasionally, they also receive foreign and local volunteers.
K+M Eco Farm House traces its roots to 1978, when Kim's parents bought the land and planted a variety of fruits including durian, rambutan, mangosteen, langsat, guava, air jambu, soursop, nangka, cempedak, banana, mango, dragon fruit, lime, lemon and pineapple. Some of the fruit trees on the farm are over 50 years old. Their fruits are available for sale when in season.
Besides fruits, Kim's parents also planted a variety of herbs like torch ginger, ginger, galangal, mint, wild parsley, lemon grass, pandan, thai basel, and turmeric. Kim's mother reduced her involvement in the farm following knee surgery in 2007. That was when Kim and Michael took over and started to learn farming. They added a few more types of fruits, including starfruit, passion fruits, mulberry, sugarcane, pomello, custard apples, lychee and asam. They are also experimenting with bee keeping since bees were already making their nests in the farm.
The K+M Eco Farm House produces some vegetables but only a limited variety. Their main vegetables are aubergine, french beans, lady's fingers, bitter gourds, cabbages, cauliflower, kailan and green mustard. Chickens are the mainstay the farm from the time Kim's mum started it. We have upgraded the chicken coops to better protect the birds from predators. The birds at K+M Eco Farm House are not only free range but are fed a mixture of all their old vegetables, herbs, fruits, coconuts, broken rice and rice husk. Besides sunbathing and roaming in search of worms and insects, the birds are able to express their natural behaviour in other ways in their spacious compound.
The chickens are released before 8:00 am and are fed twice a day. They return by themselves to their respective coops at dusk. We close their doors to protect them from pythons, owls, monitor lizards and civet cats that are always on the prowl at night. K+M Eco Farm House believes that chickens raised this way produce tastier and more nourishing eggs than their caged counterparts. Those chicken eggs are for sale when available.
K+M Eco Farm House does not sell their produce to retail shops. There are only 3 places to get their produce, which are, at at the farmers' markets at Straits Quay and Relau, or to buy directly from the farm. The farm does supply some of its produce to a few restaurants including Real Food at Straits Quay and Yin's Sourdough Dizza in Wisma YCE.
People have been asking Kim and Michael why they are willing to get into organic farm as it is tough with not much rewards. It's because they believe in eating a good and balanced diet of naturally produced (or organic) food. They consider it naïve to believe that spending a fortune on multivitamins or other "miracle products", such as "slimming pills" can compensate for an otherwise unhealthy lifestyle. Kim and Michael avoid preaching but encourage those willing to listen to acquire this knowledge and to challenge the trend towards processed foods and drinks as well as the sedentary lifestyle.
Kim and Michael open their farm to children and their parents to let them see how vegetables and fruits are being grown and farm animals are being taken care off. Their hope is that the children will recollect what it takes to produce real food and perhaps challenge the unhealthy status quo that sees farmers, whether organic or not, crushed by powerful retailers and buyers. They also believe in exercise to keep us healthy to old age.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
