Kai Curry Bar (GPS: 5.42361, 100.32251) is a Japanese curry restaurant occupying a double-storey terrace house on Phuah Hin Leong Road, in George Town, Penang. It had a soft opening in November 2014, and officially opened for business in January, 2015.
Kai Curry Bar serves various types of Japanese curry. It was opened by Mags Chow, a lady who has spent a considerable amount of time between Japan and New Zealand. She started the restaurant because her son - after whom the restaurant was named - was fond of Japanese curry.

Updates on Kai Curry Bar
May 2016
Kai Curry Bar has introduced their new Salad Series and Kids Menu. The Salad Series offers a variety of salads including the Chicken/Pork Katsu Salad, Seared Chicken Salad, Herbivore Salad and Scrambled Egg Salad. For the Kids' Series, there is the Katsubushi Onigiri (rice balls) and the Egg & Dill Sandwichh. Both the Salad Series and Kids' Series come with a choice of pork tenderloin stick, crumbled prawns, fish sticks and chicken sticks. Kai Curry Bar has also just introduced the Menchi Katsu Burger, which is a crumbed pork hamburger.
My wife and I were invited to a meal at Kai Curry Bar on 20 August 2015. Upon arriving, we felt like we were going for dinner at someone's house. The property on Phuah Hin Leong Road has the homey feel with various herbs and plants growing in pots outside. The living room, which was converted into the restaurant space, could take just about three tables, along with the cash register, with a few more tables spread out into the middle portion of the house. Having informed of our arrival, we took a seat near the door.
The deco, spotting adorable stylized dinosaurs, was created out of Kai's dinosaur drawings. Mag's interior designer friend projected the drawing on the board and traced them out. They appear on the ceiling as well as in the chairs, which Mags had gotten for a song.

Not being a food blogger, my purpose is to get to know the food, and to showcase what is there to have here. So I told Mags to give us your best shot, but to keep the amount small, for we couldn't eat a lot, but curious to sample what they offer.
The first item that came was the cold potato salad. It looks like ice cream with a sprinkling of black sesame, and is served with seaweed and sliced cucumber. I like the softness of the cold potato.

Before we could even finish the cold salad, they have brought us the next item, which is the house salad (which, if I'm not mistaken, is not yet on the menu), served with three different types of dressings: ginger lemon, wafu and black sesame. What's wafu? I was told that it is a Japanese salad dressing made with caramelised onions, rice vinegar, soya souce, olive oil, sesame oil, ginger juice and lemon juice. To ensure I do not overdo it on the dressings, I just put my salad to them. They are certainly most interesting, and I enjoy combining the different types of dressings.

And then the food start to appear at a swift pace, faster than I have time to photograph and eat them. So in a short time, our table is filled with various dishes. My wife said I should accelerate my eating!
Salmon & Cream Croquette (20 August 2015)
Salmon & Cream Croquette Oh, this is nice. The croquette is served with mango chutney, so it's a combination of crunchiness meeting sweet and sour. I am told that this is one of the most popular items on the menu.

Ebi Furai: Deepfried prawns in breadcrumbs and served with tartar sauce.
Seared chicken, Kai Curry Bar (20 August 2015)
Seared chicken: Here's another item that I enjoyed very much. The chicken meat is succulent - oh yum - and tasted very nice with the melting butter. No, that's not butter, I'm told, but mayonaise. I've gotta try it again. Oh, that's mayonaise!
We don't usually have Japanese curry (my idea of Japanese food tends to lean towards sushi, sashimi and sukiyaki) But we are game to try out the house specialties. They served us two different curry dishes to try. One was the port curry with cheese, and the other the pork hamburg with vegetarian curry without cheese.
Pork katsu with savory curry and cheese (20 August 2015)
Pork Katsu Curry with Cheese Here, we get a beautifully crunchy piece of katsu pork sitting on a bed of white rice and Japanese curry. I can't say Japanese curry is spicy, it's more like a stew which combines nicely with the white rice. Being a cheese lover, I enjoy the taste of the melting cheese in the Japanese curry.
Pork hamburg with vegetarian curry (20 August 2015)
Pork hamburg with vegetarian curry: We were next served this, to give us an idea of the various combination. This is a vegetarian curry (but considering there's the pork hamburg sitting on it, all vegetarianism is out the window for this dish). It doesn't matter to me - I'm omnivorous - and I will take vegetarian curry with these grounded pork patty which are a lot like the chicken begedil that my wife often makes.

Japanese mxed vegetable pickles I enjoy having this with my rice. It gives it a little extra kick. I was told that it is called Fukujinzuke.
If that's not enough, more food was still being served to us! We almost protested that we couldn't eat that much, but was assured that is we couldn't finish our food, we could take them home!
Tomato Pork Keema Udon, Kai Curry Bar (20 August 2015)
Tomato Pork Keema Udon is grounded pork on a bed of udon, and served with hard boiled eggs and slices of pumpkin. Just look at the udon, doesn't it look gorgeous? To be honest, I would enjoy this more, if I were not that full, but by now I am feel very full already, and had to take home much of this.
And last but not least, Kai Curry Bar is also planning to include some Southeast Asian fare to its menu, and so we were given to try their Thai-Kapitan Curry. It has a wonderful aroma of the kaffir lime and lemon grass. Again, I would have enjoyed this more, if I weren't that full, and couldn't even finish eating this small cup of curry.

After we have had our meal, Mags came out of the kitchen so that we can have a chitchat. We had a nice time getting to know her, and finding out what inspired her to open this restaurant. My wife also got to talk cooking with her; they shared with each other on where they go to buy pork, and so on. Mags showed us the curry powder which she created through many experiments until she was able to get the combination right. It was a joy to see two ladies who are passionate about cooking sharing tips.

I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
