Our dinner at Kampachi Japanese Restaurant

Having dinner at Kampachi Japanese Restaurant, Hotel EquatorialHaving dinner at Kampachi Japanese Restaurant, Hotel Equatorial (3 March 2016)

As both my wife and I love Japanese food, we often visit different restaurants in Penang serving Japanese food. Kampachi at Hotel Equatorial Penang is one of our favorites for lunch buffet, but this week, we decided to pay it a visit during dinner time. There is no buffet during the weekday, so we ordered à la carte.

As soon as we were seated, we were given hot towels and served an appetizer comprising a sort of shreded daikon and chicken meat marinated in sweet sauce. For our dinner, my wife selected the Grilled Salmon Miso Mayonnaise Dinner Set (RM62 nett) while I selected the Grilled Kabayaki Eel on Rice in Steamed Basket Dinner Set (RM70 nett). These are served with salad, chawan mushi, miso soup, pickles and an ice cream dessert.

Unlike weekends, when Kampachi would often be packed, the restaurant was quite empty when we were there. We were among the first diners to arrive that evening, so I could take a shot like this, showing all empty tables. A short while later, a group of four persons entered, and occupied another table across from us. Another table was also taken by a single diner. I believe one of the private rooms was occupied, as well as the teppanyaki bar, but otherwise, the restaurant is not packed.

Service was smooth and attentive. Our teacups were regularly refilled. Shortly after giving our orders, we were served the salad and the chawan mushi. The salad is nothing to shout about - just like any regular salad. The chawan mushi was quite interested. The egg pudding was smooth and soft. The content is just regular, and not that particularly outstanding that I would call out anything specific (I have had chawan mushi with better content other Japanese restaurants as well as at Kampachi itself before).

Shortly after we have finished our chawan mushi and salad, the main course was brought to us. My mentioned, my wife had salmon while I was having eel. Let me show you our orders.

My wife's grilled salmon was okay, but could be better. We have had grilled salmon at Kampachi many, many times, and tonight's grilled salmon is not the best we have had here. The best was two visits ago, when the salmon fresh was very juicy and not dry. We have had worse, at Kampachi, where the salmon fresh was too dry. Tonight's not so much, but could be juicier.

My grilled Kabayaki eel was good. Kabayaki is a form of preparation for the eel, or unagi, where the eel is split down the back, boned, and then cut into square fillets. It is skewered, dipped in sweet soy sauce and broiled on a grill. But it was not to my wife's liking. She took a bite of my eel and declared that luckily she did not order eel, as it was too slimy for her liking. But I do enjoy the eel that I ordered, and I also enjoyed the steamed rice under it. It's not just plain while rice, but was cooked with various vegetables.

After we have finished the main course, they brought us the ice cream, which was green tea ice cream with red bean paste. I never did care much for the red bean paste, but I finished my ice cream nonetheless.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
