Kampung Genting, Balik Pulau (27 February 2013)
Kampung Genting is a small village in
Balik Pulau. Located at the foot of Bukit Genting, it is the first settlement that you pass by when you descend the
Balik Pulau hill road coming from the direction of
Teluk Kumbar. Kampung Genting is where four rural roads meet, namely Jalan Balik Pulau, Jalan Pondok Upeh, Jalan Pulau Betong and Jalan Sungai Nipah. For that reason, the
pekan or village centre, is also called Pekan Simpang Empat, meaning
village centre of four crossroads. To the west of Kampung Genting is one of the few remaining paddy fields on Penang Island.
The name "Genting" means "hill pass", as this was a narrow pass used by the country villages to reach the settlements in Teluk Kumbar,
Sungai Batu and
Bayan Lepas. The pekan, or village centre of Kampung Genting is a Chinese settlement with a market place. Farther away from the pekan are Malay village houses.
