Empty houses on a road in Kampung Kuala Muda (1 August 2015)
Kampung Kuala Muda (GPS: 5.57435, 100.33932) is a fishing village in
Penaga,
Seberang Perai Utara. It is on the southern bank of
Sungai Muda, across from
Kampung Tepi Sungai, the Kuala Muda of Kedah. It is often known simply as Kuala Muda, though to differentiate it from Kampung Tepi Sungai, which is also Kuala Muda in Kedah, the village on the Penang side is usually called Kampung Kuala Muda.
Sights in Kampung Kuala Muda
Kampung Kuala Muda has a mix of Malay and Chinese neighbourhoods. The main landmark of the village is the local mosque. The coastline has been reenforced with rocks to prevent erosion. From here, on a clear day, you can get a good view of Penang Island.
When I visited Kampung Kuala Muda on 1 August, 2015, I saw that many of the pekan houses have been abandoned. I am not sure of the reason. Perhaps the villagers have moved elsewhere. The whole road, which once seem alive with people, now appears empty and forlorn.

Kuala Muda was one of the areas badly hit by the December 2004 tsunami. As a result of the tsunami, over 4000 people had to be evacuated and placed in temporary shelter in 8 schools. I participated in a mangrove reforestation programme which was held on 13 March 2005.
