Kampung Makam, Dato Kramat, George Town (15 December 2008)
Kampung Makam is a Malay village in the
Dato Kramat area of
George Town, Penang. It began as an Acheenese settlement founded by religious teacher named Haji Kassim.
Despite the urbanisation of George Town, a big section of the city such as Kampung Makam continues to retain its village ambience. The Malay settlements stretch all along Sungai Pinang from Jelutong - where we find
Masjid Maqbul and
Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang, all the way to Jalan Langkawi at the junction of
Jalan Air Itam.
The settlement of Kampung Makam has existed since around 1840, when sampans can go all the way up
Sungai Pinang to reach it. At that time, it was known as Pengkalan Haji Kassim, after the pier built by Haji Kassim for sampans to berth at the settlement. Haji Kassim also built the village mosque, now called
Masjid Haji Kassim. It is still in existence today, and is accessed from Jalan Dato Keramat. The village was only renamed Kampung Makam after the demise of Haji Kassim, as it then began to be referred after the mausoleum or
makam of Haji Kassim. The name Kampung Makam means "village of the mausoleum".
Today Kampung Makam is hemmed in on the northern side by
Dato Kramat Road and to the east by
Cheah Choo Yew Road.
