Kampung Sungai Burung, Balik Pulau (27 February 2013)
Kampung Sungai Burung (GPS: 5.33896, 100.20299), also spelled Kampung Sungai Burong or simply Sungai Burung, is a small Malay village in
Balik Pulau. Located near the coast, the village of Kampung Sungai Burung got its name from
Sungai Burong, a stream whose name means "bird river". It flows west into the mangrove swamp of Balik Pulau.
Many of the villagers in Kampung Sungai Burung are either fishermen or farmers. Kampung Sungai Burung is 25 km from
Komtar. It is one of the farthest away village on Penang Island from the city centre. Nonetheless, even here urban development is appearing, as land in the area is being converted for housing development.
Amenities
The nearest schools are Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Yeok Hua, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Tar Thong and Sekolah Maahad Al-Mashoor Al-Islami. The nearest petrol stations are the Petronas and Shell along
Jalan Balik Pulau. The nearest market is the
Balik Pulau Market, although there are itinerant hawkers selling produce at the village as well. The nearest hospital is Hospital Balik Pulau.
Going to Kampung Sungai Burung by public transport
The main road in the area, Jalan Sungai Burung, is served by
Rapid Penang bus 403. There are bus stops along the main road at different parts of Kampung Sungai Burung.
