Kandar Sculpture (12 May 2013)

The
"Kandar" Sculpture is the second steel-rod sculpture to be installed on
Ah Quee Street in
George Town, Penang. It celebrates nasi kandar, a Tamil Muslim rice meal that was originally sold in itinerant manner on the street. The name
kandar refers to the pole used to carry the food items about.

Today nasi kandar has moved indoors into proper restaurants. In the past, many nasi kandar stalls were set up in coffee shops, but in the past decade, a number of 24-hour nasi kandar restaurants have appeared, including a few along nearby Chulia Street. The "Kandar" sculpture is based on a caricature by cartoonist
Tang Mun Kian. It is among the last batch of sculptures installed under the Marking George Town project.
