Kawan Drop-In Center (30 June 2014)
Kawan is a centre to help needy people living in the city of George Town. It is run by an interdenominational Christian organisation called YWAM Malaysia. The acronym stands for Youth With A Mission.
Kawan calls itself a "drop in center". In other words, it is a place where people with needs can drop in. Kawan is, among other things, a soup kitchen offering free breakfast and lunch as well as a place for homeless people to bathe and to wash their clothing. Kawan also provides counselling and information on sexually transmitted diseases, as they often deal with those addicted to drugs as well as those engaged in the sex industry.
The services at Kawan is managed by teams of volunteers. In addition to providing the aforementioned services, the volunteers also conduct Bible studies in the vernacular language. As it is run by volunteers, it is not open daily, but rather only three days per week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
