Karaganda (Kazakh: Қарағанды/Karagandy) is a city in central
Kazakhstan. It was known in Russian as Караганда (Karaganda) until 1993, and is still commonly known as Karaganda in English. The city has a populaton of 472,000 people, making it the fourth largest city in the country behind
Almaty,
Astana and
Shymkent. Once the second largest city in Kazakhstan, Karaganda has declined in population, particularly between 1989 and 1999, when some one hundred thousand ethnic Germans emigrated to Germany.
