Kek Seng Coffee Shop (GPS: 5.41625, 100.32927) is a coffee shop along Penang Road. It was one of the most famous coffee shops in Penang during the 1970s, when Penang Road was the main shopping street on the island. Kek Seng Coffee Shop was particularly famous for its home-made durian ice cream and ice kacang. These used to command premium prices in its heydays.

According to the Kek Seng Coffee Shop signboard, the coffee shop dates back to 1906. Today it has seen better days. Among the hawker dishes available here include Jawa Mee, Chicken Rice, Lor Bak, and Laksa, to name a few.

Updates on Kek Seng Coffee Shop

24 March 2013: Last Wednesday (20 March) I tried the Ice Kacang at Kek Seng on Penang Road. I remember when I was small the coffee shop used to be crowded. Now there is hardly any patron. I ordered the ice kacang with two scoops of durian ice cream. Having tried it, I won't be repeating the order for a long, long time. The shaved ice is almost frozen together in a chunk. They don't even have sarsi syrup, so they only used rose syrup. I think they haven't received an order for their "famous" ice kacang in a long while, as they actually have to search about to fulfill my order. The price? RM4.50. You can't go further downhill than this.

Getting there

From the Komtar Bus Terminal, walk west along Tek Soon Street until you reach the junction with Penang Road. Cross to the other side of Penang Road then turn right and continue until you arrive at Kek Seng Coffee Shop, on your left.
