Khoo Kongsi Beach Street Entrance

Khoo Kongsi Beach Street EntranceKhoo Kongsi Beach Street Entrance (11 February 2013)

The Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi once had entrances facing not only Cannon Street, but also Beach Street and Armenian Street. The entrances to Beach Street and Armenian Street have since been closed permanently. Nevertheless, the archway at the Beach Street entrance has been preserved and restored.

The Khoo Kongsi Beach Street entrance has a straight roof ride that is heavily ornamented with intricate floral design out of broken porcelain, or chien4nien2. Sloping down on either sides are the roof tiles. They include the plate-shaped orange-coloured ban tiles that are arranged to slope downwards, alternating with the bamboo-shapred tong tiles, ending with the circular porcelain tile cover, called the rui zhu or wa dang.

Presently, plain boards panel the entrance of the Khoo Kongsi Beach Street entrance. Above the entrance way is a gilded plaque with the words Sin3 Kang4, meaning "new river", the name of the Khoo ancestral village, rendered in Chinese calligraphy.
