Super Star Koay Teow Thng (GPS: 5.41635, 100.33282) is one of the famous koay teow thng stalls in Penang. Formerly known as the Sky Emperor Chicken Feet Koay Teow Thng, it operates from a pushcart along Kimberley Street outside Kedai Minuman Dessert Old Time Delight Shop, near other hawker specialties such as almond cream and koay chiap. The koay teow thng seller also operates from his house at Jalan Sungai Ujong from morning till lunch time. Although the main dish here is koay teow thng, the star item are its braised chicken feet and braised chicken thigh/wing. Also available are braised hard-boiled eggs and braised intestines.

Having just recovered from chikungunya, I have a craving for my favourite food, and one of them is this koay teow thng. As usual, we ordered two bowls of koay teow thng (RM4.50 each) and one large platter of chicken feet, hard-boil egg and braised intestines. For beverage, I had the glass jelly in milk.

When I visited the stall, I saw that business was brisk. Despite having three Indonesian helpers, the two sellers were working at a furious pace. I saw short temper from them towards their helpers for repeatedly forgetting to recognise customers, and so were bringing back full trays when they could not locate the customers.

We managed to get a table right next to the stall itself, so we had no problem in getting our orders served correctly. This is my first visit to this hawker stall. I tried every dish they served, and I must say that I am quite satisfied with the taste.

I have read in other blogs as well as Facebook comments that the koay teow thng is only "so so", so I didn't put much high hopes to it. I was however pleasantly surprised to find that the koay teow thng was much better than I had expected. The koay teow is very soft, the soup tasty, and as for the ingredients, I would describe it in Penang Hokkien as ho1 liau3. In my personal opinion, the taste is much better than that of the Pitt Street Koay Teow Thng. See from our table, the plates before and after we finished our meal!

As our table was right next to the stall, I could see the amount of food being dished out. When the amount of chicken feet in the main pot was exhausted, the worker empty another pot of chicken feet into it. It filled up to the brim, but by the time we finished out meal, the level of chicken feet in the main pot had gone down by two inches!

For beverage, we ordered the See Koh Thng and Almond Cream from the stall next to it. The almond cream stall is a Penang institution, having operated here for the past fifty years. Although it is an acquired taste to some, it is to me a delicacy which I have enjoyed since small.

Although the Sky Emperor Chicken Feet Koay Teow Thng obviously appeared to be doing roaring business, I do not find the sellers to be at all happy. Rather I found them rather snappy, especially towards their hapless workers. And none of their workers appear happy either. Perhaps they are all stressed out from all the business roaring their way. That, I suppose, is the price of success.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
