Kimberley Street has many hawker stalls that operate in the evening. Yesterday my wife and I ate there, and we decided to order the lor bak. We have seen the stall before, but this was the first time we tried it. On the stall is a signage saying that the lor bak has been selling since 1970, so I had high hopes.
We decided to have a side order to our meal. Seeing the lor bak stall across the road, I went order to make an order. I picked a piece of lor bak, a fritter, a piece of beancurd and what the hawker said was their homemade sausage. As this is just a side order for two persons, I selected a rather short piece of sausage. This is how our order look like:
Kimberley Street Lor Bak (8 April 2016)
Do you have any idea how much this plate of lor bak cost? It was RM8.50! When we asked the hawker for a breakdown of the price, it turns out that the sausage alone cost RM4.00! I counted that that small piece of sausage is sliced into eight pieces, so each piece of a sausage is 50 sen!
We were also not very satisfied with the lor dip, which we found to be quite runny. The chilli dip has a firmer consistency than the lor, but the lor dip was lousy.
We found that the fritter was not very crispy, nor was the lor bak itself. To me, the lor bak still tasted okay, but my wife pronounced that it is way below her expectation, that the outer skin was not sufficiently crispy.
On the whole, we found that this order of lor bak was a disappointment to us. From our table across the road, we saw that it wasn't doing good business, which I suppose figures. The hawker needs to improve on the lor dip. He also has to ensure that his items, particularly the lor bak and the fritter, are hot and crispy when they arrive at the customer's table. And finally, we feel the price of the sausage is way overboard.
