KK Dim Sum Garden is a dim sum restaurant in Farlim, Penang. My wife and I used to visit it a few years ago, but in the past two or three years, we moved to the Red Teahouse, which is at a different location in Farlim. However, on our last visit to the Red Teahouse, we found that the price has increased substantially, while the quality also dropped. So we returned to KK Dim Sum Garden. And we were surprised to see it is now drawing all the crowds.
Our side of the table at KK Dim Sum Garden (2 May 2014)
There was no empty tables, so we had to share tables with another family. We learned from the family which comprises an elderly couple and their two grown-up children, that the parents usually patronize KK Dim Sum Garden as their regular watering hole, a place to meet up with other old friends. They told me that they too found the taste at Red Teahouse not up to their standard. As they are regular patrons at KK Dim Sum, they recommended one of their favourite dim sums to us, the pi3tan2 kai1, which is a deepfried item with century egg. I in return recommended to the family my favourite item at KK Dim Sum, the lo3han1cai1, which I do not find at other dim sum restaurants.
The Hong Kong-style chee cheong fun at KK Dim Sum Garden is quite different from Hong Kong-style chee cheong fun I have tasted elsewhere. Over there, it is filled not with prawns but with deepfried fish, which is quite crunchy when you bite into it.

On the negative side, my wife commented that their egg tart is not as tasty as before. The same goes with their carrot cake. However, on the whole, we were much more satisfied with our meal here than we had at the Farlim Red Teahouse, where we were so jelak that we couldn't finish the fiood we had taken. I would certainly not discourage anybody from going to Farlim Red Teahouse, and would even return to it from time to time, to check with the hope that the quality of their food had since bounced back. But after my visit to KK Dim Sum Garden, I found myself looking forward to another visit there soon.
What we had
Here are some of the dim sum dishes we had, along with its name in Penang Hokkien. Although many of the dim sum dishes are of Cantonese origin, there are Hokkien names to them (though some are simply Hokkien pronunciation of the Cantonese names). If you want to learn to pronounce these in Penang Hokkien, refer to this page on Dim Sum Dishes. It has audio.
This is the Lo3 Han1 Cai1 that I like very much. So far, I only found it at KK Dim Sum Garden (1 May 2014)

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
