The famous Cooked Koay Teow Th'ng of Sri Nibung Coffee Shop (30 April 2008)
Penang Koay Teow Th'ng is a popular hawker food at most hawker centres and coffee shops. It is a soup dish comprising flat rice noodles cooked in clear broth and topped with slices of chicken meat, fish balls and fish cakes. Minced pork is often added as well. The preparation is garnished with garlic bits, fried pork fat and scallions.
Koay Teow Th'ng is usually served with a condiment of sliced chilli in soy-vinegar, either the big, red chilli or the hotter small green chilli.
Traditionally regarded as a breakfast meal, Koay Teow Th'ng has since found its way into the lunch and even dinner menu. As it is a common hawker fare, you can find Koay Teow Th'ng sold in practically any coffee shop in Penang.
There are two types of Koay Teow Th'ng. One is the instantly cooked version, where the broth is drenched over the koay teow. The other version is where the koay teow is cooked in the broth. Of the two, the first one is usually of a smaller portion than the latter, and is also the cheaper of the two.
