Komtar SkyArt is a mural that will span the entire height of the 68-storey Komtar Tower. The mural, which will depict local scenes of the various communities in Penang, will be painted over a course of 6 months. Artists involved in this project include Bibichun, The Sliz, Kangblabla, Sattama and IMMJN. They were selected based on their past experience in painting large murals. All the artists were either born in Penang or have set up a base here.
The Komtar SkyArt project is sponsored by Only World Group (OWG) and supported by the Penang State Government. Measuring 230 meters high and 13.1 meters wide, the Komtar SkyArt will be the "World's Tallest Mural". When completed in January 2018, it will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for its endorsement, said Dato' Sri Richard Koh, the Chief Executive Officer of OWG. The paint is sponsored by Nippon Paint at a cost of RM30,000, while OWG bears the production cost of RM300,000.
According to Nippoint Paint Assistant General Manager, Mr Alex Yoong Choong Kheong, the project is an opportunity to provide a platform for talented local artists to express their creativity, while at the same time, showcase their spray paint solution, Nippon PYLOX, which will be used to create the landmark masterpiece.
The Chief Minister of Penang, the Right Honourable Lim Guan Eng was on hand to officiate the launch of the mural project. Mr Lim congratulated OWG for having revitalised Komtar, from what was once a slum which "even beggars avoid" into something which all Penangites can be proud of.
