The Komtar Tower is still the tallest skyscraper in Penang. It was completed in 1985, that's 25 years ago as of time I write this. The centrepiece of the Komtar urban redevelopment project, the tower is 232 meters tall and has 65 storeys, inclusive the 4-storey podium. The tower has 12 sides forming a cylindrical structure separated into three tiers.

Today Komtar Tower houses mostly government offices. You can get a very good view of George Town from the tower, as shown in the photos below. With much of George Town now being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the likelihood of another skyscraper dwarfing it is presently remote. If it happens at all, the next skyscraper matching or surpassing its height will have to be built a distance away from it.

Getting there

The Komtar Tower is open to the public Mondays to Fridays during office hours. Enquire at the information desk at the entrance to the tower on the ground floor, below Popular Book Store.
