Komtar Tree Trunk Sculpture (4 May 2013)
The Tree Trunk Sculpture is a street art in front of Komtar in
George Town, Penang. It stands on the open area near the Magazine Circus, between Magazine Road and Penang Road.
The Tree Trunk Sculpture was created by Japanese wood artist Katsumi Mukai in October, 2005. It is part of the Sculpture Island Project, which was sponsored by the Penang State Art Gallery and Penang Environment Art Heritage Group (also known as Penang Earth Group).
Mr Mukai used the trunk of a jati tree to create his sculpture. The piece comes from a tree that was originally standing near the Penang Hospital but had to make way for the construction of new staff quarters. Mukai was assisted by another Japanese artist, Hitori Nakayama, who is a long-term resident of Penang. Together they took about two months to complete the sculpture.
