Kuantan Road Curry Mee at Hai Beng (15 October 2017)
The famous Kuantan Road Curry Mee has a stall at Hai Beng Coffee Shop in Pulau Tikus. I didn't know that until I visited Hai Beng when I was staying at Sunrise Gurney 68PG Seafront Duplex Homestay. I decided to order the big bowl for my wife and me. It's RM5.50 per bowl, and if you want extra liau33 (ingredients), then it's RM7. I decided that the RM5.50 bowl is good enough for me.
When the curry mee arrived, I wasn't sure it was going to be tasty or not. Because it looked so white. The chilli paste is placed on the spoon. My wife, who doesn't fancy things being too spicy, gave me some of her chilli paste as well. Then we mixed it into our bowl, and the soup turned from white to orange red.
The curry mee has cockles, coagulated blood, prawns, cuttlefish and soyapuffs (tau33pork1). I did not notice any mint, which is a bit of a disappointment to me. However, the curry mee taste is very agreeable, and I enjoyed it very much. The prawns looked translucent, not opaque like the prawns we cook at home. I wonder why (and brought that up on my Facebook Group). Someone suggested that these are freshwater prawns.
The Kuantan Road Curry Mee stall operates every day except Thursday. The stall starts selling from 8:00am in the morning and finish selling at around 2:00pm.

I returned to Kedai Kopi Hai Beng. Having forgotten how the Kuantan Road Curry Mee tasted like, I ordered it again. This one is the medium size bowl, at RM5.50. As before, it came looking rather white, with the chilli on the side.
I found it not as salty as I would have wanted. Also, the amount of chilli paste wasn't much - I could have returned to the stall and ask for some more, but I didn't, preferring to eat it as it was. I liked the big prawns. On the whole, this curry mee is still agreeable, but didn't thrill me as much as before. Nevertheless, I will be back in future.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
