Kwong Wah Yit Poh (GPS: 5.41077, 100.33156) is a Chinese-language newspaper based in Penang. Its main bureau is presently located at
Presgrave Street,
George Town.
Founded in 1910, Kwong Wah Yit Poh is said to be the oldest Chinese-language daily in Malaysia and the oldest surviving Chinese newspaper in the world.
The name Kwong Wah Yit Poh can be translated as "bright Chinese daily news". It traces its roots to a predecessor paper known as Kwong Wah Pao, originally based in
Rangoon. It was the mouthpiece of the Tongmenghui, the vehicle of Republicans led by Dr Sun Yat-sen and his followers to overthrow the Qing Dynasty government of Imperial China.
The founding date of Kwong Wah Yit Poh is 20 December, 1910. In the very beginning, it was housed at
120, Armenian Street. Since then, it has had its bureaux at
16, Malay Street as well as at
Chulia Street Ghaut. The paper celebrated its centenary in 2010.
Kwong Wah Yit Poh moved into its present premises, Wisma Kwong Wah Yit Poh, on Presgrave Street on 12 June, 1992. Its advertising department occupies an Art Deco-style shophouse across from its head office on Prestrave Street.
