More on Bishkek
Bishkek has undergone a number of name changes since its founding as a fortress in 1825, when it was originally called by the present name. That was changed to Pishpek in 1862 and to Frunze in 1926. The Kyrgyz parliament restored the original name in 1991. Although the city itself is comparatively young, it is located in an area bearing human habitation since prehistory.
The city of Bishkek bears traces of its Soviet past. It has wide boulevards and the monotonous Soviet-style apartment blocks. Yusup Abdrakhmanov Street, also called Sovietskaya Street, forms the main axis running north-south through the city.
If you want to see the locals going about their daily life, go to Osh Bazaar in the downtown area.
