Lean Thye, Ah Quee Street

Kedai Kopi Lean Thye, Ah Quee Street (25 January 2013)


Lean Thye (GPS: 5.41558, 100.33867) is a coffee shop along Ah Quee Street, in George Town, Penang. Its call to fame is its lor mee, which many says is the best in town. I haven't yet tried it, so I cannot comment. The stall starts selling from early morning, around 7:00 am, and would be sold out by half past nine.



15 May, 2014: My wife and I decided to go to Lean Thye to try the lor mee for breakfast. We arrived around 9:10 am in the morning. We ordered the regular size bowls, which cost RM3.50 (there's also the large at RM4.00, add-on duck egg at RM1.30 and add on pork at RM1.70). This is how it looks like:

Having tried it, I have to say that I found it "nothing to shout about". Okay, it does have the lor mee taste, but it's no better than the lor mee at Hai Beng (Burmah Road-Jones Road junction) or the Hai Beng on Pitt Street. The one at Lean Thye doesn't come with chicken feet or pig skin. The taste also is not as nice compared to my favourite, at the Jelutong market. Also the one at Perak Road (Joo Huat Restaurant) to be better.

Getting there

The nearest bus stop is along Chulia Street. Almost all Rapid Penang buses pass through Chulia Street whether from Weld Quay or Komtar bus terminals. From Chulia Street, walk either to Pitt Lane or Beach Street, then continue to Ah Quee Street.
