Penang Lor MeeThe Penang Lor Mee at Jelutong Market is one of my favourites (1 September 2012)

The Penang Lor Mee (檳城滷麵), also written Loh Mee, is a Penang hawker noodle soup of a gooey broth made from tapioca flour and egg. The ingredients include mee (egg noodles), bihun (rice noodles), taugeh (bean sprouts), slices of boiled egg, garnished with golden-fried onions, topped with pork (or chicken) slices, and served with chilli and vinegared garlic pastes. Some stalls also include chicken feet, regarded as a specialty and a delicacy. (I actually learned to take chicken feet because of Lor Mee).

Many Hokkien Mee stalls sell Lor Mee on the side, but to get really good Lor Mee, go for stalls that sell only Lor Mee. They are more likely to have the fully range of Lor Mee ingredients.

Ingredients of Lor Mee:

  1. egg noodles
  2. rice noodles
  3. boiled egg
  4. bean sprouts
  5. pork / chicken meat
  6. chicken feet (optional)
  7. innards (optional)
  8. golden-fried onions
  9. vinegared garlic paste
  10. chilli paste

If you are looking for stalls selling Lor Mee, my food map below should prove helpful. It shows all the Lor Mee stalls that I have come across. The numbers correspond to the list of stalls shown below.

Where to find Lor Mee Stalls in Penang

There are a number of popular lor mee stalls in Penang. The famous ones include the stall at Kedai Kopi Hai Beng at the junction of Burmah and Jones Roads, another, also called Hai Beng, at the junction of Pitt Street and Stewart Lane, and the one at Joo Huat Restaurant along Perak Road, near the Perak Road Market. My favourite, however, is a stall along Ipoh Lane, near the Jelutong Market. Recently (Oct 2019), I also discovered a loh mee stall at Super Tanker Hawker Centre.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
