Lum Fong Hotel (4 December 2008)
Lum Fong Hotel (GPS: 5.42078, 100.33383) is a budget hotel housed in an early 20th century heritage building in
Muntri Street. What makes this hotel significant is that it was the original premises of the
Penang Adventist Hospital. The hospital began as a clinic founded by an American doctor named Earl Gardner. Dr Gardner opened his clinic at 108 Muntri Street on
12 December, 1924. It provided free treatment to the poor and needy. Within 19 days of the opening, the clinic was swarmed with patients, registering over 600. The number grew to 1600 in January, and 2000 the following month.
The clinic has since moved on to other premises, before settling at its present site along Jalan Burma. The premises at 108 Muntri Street today houses a bistro, a coffee shop and a budget bed-and-breakfast.
