History of Lumut Lane
Mid to late 19th Century
Lumut Lane was occupied by Muslim traders and those involved in the Haj pilgrimage. At that time, Lumut Lane was still not paved. It was the path into the Malay village of Kampung Wakaf, built on endowment land of the
Acheen Street Mosque.

The family and descendents of Sheikh Omar Basheer Al-Khalidy had warehouses and business premises there. Sheikh Omar Basheer was the imam of the Acheen Street Mosque.
Following the Penang Riots of 1867 involving two rival Malay secret societies, the Red Flag and the White Flag, he issued a
fatwa outlawing involvement in secret society activities. He died in 1881 and had the
biggest Muslim mausoleum in Penang, in
Kampung Melayu, Air Itam, where he was also a religious teacher of the Air Itam Mosque.
