Macallum Loh Mee (14 April 2018)


Macallum Loh Mee 檳城滷麵 (GPS: 5.40746, 100.33244) is a loh mee stall at Kedai Kopi Sing May Mah, in the Macallum Street Ghaut neighbourhood of George Town, Penang. The stall has been operating for over 15 years, but I was only now introduced to it when a relative of the owner invited me over to give it a try. The lor mee is sold for RM3.50 (small) and RM4.00 (large). My wife and I visited the stall on 14 April. We decided to call the large bowl. Here's how it looks like:

It does look good, doesn't it? The lor mee comes with one whole egg, along with pork belly meat, pig skin and pig intestine, (though I was told, pork skin is not every day). As I started to thoroughly mix my bowl of lor mee, I was slightly disappointed to see all noodles and not much "liau33" (ingredients, literally "stuff"), an opinion that was immediately expressed. Well, actually it turned out to be a premature reaction. You see, most of the noodle was on top, so as I worked my way into the bowl, then I reached all the meaty stuff below. And the more I ate, the more I loved it, so much so that I found myself finishing the entire bowl of loh.

I love the taste of this loh mee. My initial reaction that it is lacking in liau was corrected when I worked my way down the bowl, and found the meaty stuff underneath. Having said that, this loh does not come with chicken feet, which I would relish. Yeah, I can be quite a pampered diner expecting lots of luxurious ingredients. However, I acknowledge that the stall is at a working class neighbourhood, hence it has to cater to the budget of its customers. I have no complaint over the price. RM4 for a large bowl of loh mee is quite economical by today's standard, and the popularity of this stall is attested in that they were sold out within two hours (the stall opens at 7:30am in the morning).

We paid a return visit to the Macallum Loh Mee, as we haven't eaten there in quite a while. I ordered the small (RM3.50) for my wife and the large (RM4.00) for myself. It is very meaty and good value for money. My wife liked the "lor", which is sticky and starchy.
