Johor Bahru-Singapore Rail Transit System is a rail transit system connecting
Johor Bahru with
Singapore across the
Straits of Johor. Construction of this project began on 22 November 2022 in Malaysia and 22 January 2021 in Singapore. It entails constructing a 4.0 km rail line of which 2.3 km will be in Malaysian territory and 1.7 km in Singapore. The railway line will comprise elevated and underground tracks.
The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rail Transit System was first proposed in 1991. At that time, Singapore's communications minister Mah Bow Tan had intended to extend the North South Line of the Singapore MRT. This was agreed in principle by Malaysia and Singapore.
In June 2011, Singapore proposed that the line connects to the
Woodlands North MRT Station of the
Thomson-East Coast Line instead. On 13 Decembr 2016, the prime ministers of both countries agreed to a high-bridge crossing for the Rail Transit System across the Strait of Johor. Prasarana Malaysia represents Malaysia while SMRT Corporation represents Singapore.
