Church of St Louis, Kluang (5 August 2019)
Church of St Louis (GPS: 2.03802, 103.31684) is a Roman Catholic church in
Kluang, Johor. It is located in a spacious compound fronting
Jalan Omar. Next to the church is Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Jalan Haji Manan. Nearby is the hall of Persatuan Malaysian Ceylonese Johor Tengah.
The Catholic faith arrived in the town of Kluang due to efforts of missionaries from the Paris Foreign Missions Society (
Société des Missions étrangères de Paris, usually abbreviated as M.E.P.), in particular Father Henri Duvelle
1, who was active in church planting work in Johor in the early 20th century.
St Louis Church was established in 1928 and was named in rememberance of Father Duvelle's brother, Louis Duvelle, who had passed away that same year, and also after his brother's patron saint, St Louis (who reigned as
Louis IX of France).
