Kluang Rail Coffee (GPS: 2.03363, 103.3175) is a famous coffee shop in Kluang, Johor. As its name probably indicates, the coffee shop started out within the Kluang Railway Station. Its history goes back to 1938, and it is as old as the present railway station itself.
Kluang Rail Coffee has remained in the family since then. It continues to serve patrons, a large number of which a locals along with rail passengers passing on their way somewhere.
I visited Kluang Rail Coffee on 3 August, 2019, on the food tour organized by Singapore cookbook author Evonne Lyn Lee. We were received by Pastor Lim Jit Pang, whose cousin continues to operate Kluang Rail Coffee. Pastor Lim provided us an insight into the history of Kluang Rail Coffee, snippets of which you can follow in the video below.
Pastor Lim Jit Pang explaining the history of Kluang Rail Coffee to us (4 August, 2019)
To give us a glimpse of the simple life in Kluang (and for that matter, in yesteryear Malaysia), our tour organiser Evonne had ordered for us to try the toasted bread and toasted bun with kaya and butter. I learned that the toasts were roasted over charcoal to give them their distinct aroma. Spread over them was kaya and generous dollops of butter - which for a moment I mistaken for banana slices!
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
