Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Bahru

[an error occurred while processing this directive] Port of Tanjung Pelepas (GPS: 1.36349, 103.5526) is one of the two ports of Johor Bahru. It is situated on the eastern bank, at the mouth of the Pulai River, to the west of Johor Bahru. The port of Tanjung Pelepas began operations on 10 October, 1999. It set a world record for being the fastest port to reach a one-million twenty-foot equivalent units, TEU, within 571 days since operations began. By 2003, it was handling 3.87 TEU, outstripping even Port Klang to become the largest port in Malaysia. By 2007, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas was handling over 5 million TEU.

Port of Tanjung Pelepas gained significantly from its proximity to Singapore. When Maersk Sealand, the world's largest container ship operator, took a 30% stake in Seaport Terminal, the holding company of Tanjung Pelepas Port, it resulted in Maersk Sealand shifting its operations from Singapore to Tanjung Pelepas. Maersk was the largest operator in Singapore, and the move represented 10% shift of the shipping business from the island nation. In 2002, Evergreen Marine Corp, the second largest shipping company in the world after Maersk, also shifted to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

The Tanjung Pelepas port has planned for further expansions to reach a handling capacity of 12 million TEUs by 2009.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
