Jalan Bentayan, Muar (11 September, 2016)
Jalan Bentayan is a street in downtown
Muar, Johor. It comprises two parts. The section between
Jalan Maharani to
Jalan Abdullah is one way. From Jalan Abdullah to
Jalan Bakri, traffic flow is two ways.
Jalan Bentayan took its name from Fort Bentayan, which in turn took its name from
Sungai Bentayan, a tributary of
Sungai Muar. The fort in that area, now no longer extant was built by Sultan Mahmud, the last Sultan of
Malacca, as a means to thwart invasion. That didn't proof successful, for the Portuguese attacked and took over Muar anyway, forcing Sultan Mahmud to once again flee, to
Pagoh.
