Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar (GPS: 2.0461, 102.56194), or
Sultan Abu Bakar Building, is one of the most imposing buildings in
Muar. It is located along
Jalan Petrie, at the junction with Jalan Mohamadah, with a playing field in front of it. The building has a grand staircase in front.
Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar was completed in 1921 and houses the
Muar District Office (
Pejabat Daerah Muar). It replaces the first district office of Muar which was built in 1884, and used until 1915, when it made way for the construction of this present structure. Construction was delayed by World War I until 1918, when construction resumed. The building was completed in 1921.
Sultan Abu Bakar Building was used during the Japanese Occupation as the head office of the Japanese administration. After the war, it reverted to the British colonial government which in turn handed it to the Johor State Government upon independence.
