Kulim International Airport (GPS: 5.58181, 100.53836; KXP) is an international airport being planned for
Kulim, Kedah. According to a presentation file from Kedah's Budget 2020, the airport will have two runways. The development will be financed by the sale of an 18 sqkm piece of land around the proposed airport site. The airport is expected to serve a catchment of 1.2 million people, particularly those in
Kuala Muda,
Kulim,
Baling and
Seberang Prai Utara.
Kulim International Airport will occupy a 17 sqkm piece of land at the border with
Seberang Perai, Penang. In comparison, the Penang International Airport occupies just 3.3 sqkm of land while
Kuala Lumpur International Airport occupies 100 sqkm. The site chose, which is presently palm oil plantation and paddy fields, is in
Kulim District, just west of Bandar Puteri Jaya, and southwest of
Sungai Petani. It is 20km from Kulim town, and 30km from the landing of
Penang Bridge on the mainland side.
When the
Penang Undersea Tunnel is built, it is also about 30 km from the tunnel via the
North-South Expressway. The land acquisition cost is calculated to be around RM3psf. When the agricultural land is converted to development land, the market value is expected to increase seven-fold to RM21psf, which will provide an income of RM3.25 billion over 10 years.
According to the proposal, a new interchange will also be built to connect it to the North South Expressway. That interchange will be located north of
Sungai Muda.
Penang Travel Tips will provide you more updates on this infrastructure project progressively.
