Gallo Nero Italian Restaurant (GPS: 6.35056, 99.73184) is a restaurant in Padang Matsirat, Langkawi. It occupies a corner shoplot at the western end of Jalan Padang Matsirat, near the junction with Jalan Lapangan Terbang. The restaurant is owned by an Italian from Milan, Mr Lorenzo Zecubi, who is also the chef.

Gallo Nero means black rooster in Italian. The name pays homage to the wine that comes from the Classico subdistrict of the Chianti region of Central Tuscany, Italy. The Chianti region is divided into seven subdistricts. Wines from the Classico subdistrict bear the black rooster, or gallo nero, seal on the neck of the bottle, to indicate that the wine comes from a producer that is part of the Chianti Classico Consortium.

Gallo Nero Italian Restaurant offers possibly the most authentic representation of Italian cuisine that you can find in Langkawi.

Our visit to Gallo Nero Italian Restaurant

My wife and I had the privilege of dining at Gallo Nero Italian Restaurant on 8 September, 2018. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Lorenzo, who had prepared for us a full set dinner.

We started our meal with the aperitivo. I had the prosecco wine with Campani while my wife had the Elderberry mocktail. This is served with homemade bread comprising foaccia, pizzette and grissini stick.

Next came a platter of antipasti, or appetizers. They comprise buffalo burrata. This is a cheese made from mozzarella and cream, and is made fresh in Langkawi by an Italian producer who supplies to the various restaurants on the island. The availability of this local supplier enables Gallo Nero to offer freshly made burrata every day.

This evening, we had the buffalo buffata with Roma tomatoes, origano and basil oil.

Served alongside the burrata is fresh marinated salmon with quail eggs, fresh beans and lemon emulsion.

And next to that is the third appetizer, crab and potato croquette with basil aioli dip. The aioli is a Mediterranean sauce made of garlic and olive oil.

After that came the main courses. This evening, we tried the egg tagliolini with three types of mushrooms, sage butter and parmigiano; and the sea bass à la plancia, vine tomato, olives, capers and caperberries.

By the time we finished the main course, we were both quite full already. But there's still the dessert, which provided a superb ending to the meal.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable meal. There's nothing that I can find to complain, except perhaps the main course was a bit too salty, particularly the caperberries. I mentioned that to my wife, who immediately pointed out to me that these items need to be salty, to balance out the taste of the fish.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
