Gunung Raya, LangkawiGunung Raya, Langkawi (26 September, 2018)

Gunung Raya (GPS: 6.36963, 99.81937) is the tallest peak on Pulau Langkawi. It stands at 881 meters. From the peak of Gunung Raya, one can get a full circle view of Langkawi. The peak of Gunung Raya is said to be one of the favourite spots for Tun Datuk Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. He has been spotted driving his own four-wheel drive vehicle up to Gunung Raya to enjoy the peace. At the peak of Gunung Raya is a teahouse, an art gallery and a museum.

According to Langkawi legend, Gunung Raya was once a giant named Mat Raya. He transformed into the mountain following the big fight he had with another giant, Machincang, over the wedding of his son to Machincang's daughter. Machincang also was transformed into a mountain, called Gunung Machincang.

We arrived at the peak of Gunung Raya on an overcast day. From the top, we can see views of the lowlands with misty clouds floating by. The security guard was friendly and spoke to us. He showed us a rhinoceros beetle that he came upon that morning.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
