Gunung Raya, Langkawi (26 September, 2018)
Gunung Raya (GPS: 6.36963, 99.81937) is the tallest peak on
Pulau Langkawi. It stands at 881 meters. From the peak of Gunung Raya, one can get a full circle view of Langkawi. The peak of Gunung Raya is said to be one of the favourite spots for Tun Datuk Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. He has been spotted driving his own four-wheel drive vehicle up to Gunung Raya to enjoy the peace. At the peak of Gunung Raya is a teahouse, an art gallery and a museum.
According to Langkawi legend, Gunung Raya was once a giant named Mat Raya. He transformed into the mountain following the big fight he had with another giant, Machincang, over the wedding of his son to Machincang's daughter. Machincang also was transformed into a mountain, called
Gunung Machincang.
We arrived at the peak of Gunung Raya on an overcast day. From the top, we can see views of the lowlands with misty clouds floating by. The security guard was friendly and spoke to us. He showed us a rhinoceros beetle that he came upon that morning.
