Thean Hou Temple (GPS: 6.33608, 99.81279) is a major Chinese temple in Langkawi. At time of writing (Sept 2018), this is possibly the newest and biggest Chinese temple on the island. The temple was only completed in late 2017.

As its name suggests, the Langkawi Thean Hou Temple was built for the veneration of Mazu, the Chinese sea goddess, who is known by various names and titles including Ma3cu1 Poh2 in Hokkien and the Mandarin title Thean Hou 天后, which means "Queen/Empress of Heaven". The colossal temple, covering a floor area of 2,368 square meters, sits at the top of a flight of grand staircase, within a 1.5-acre plot in Taman Seri Aman off Jalan Padang Gaung, Langkawi.

The Langkawi Thean Hou Temple building comprises a grand porch and a prayer hall. These are sheltered by a double-tier Chinese temple roof with curved roof ridges. The roof ridges, which are ornamented with colourful porcelain pieces, are embellished with prancing dragons and glowing orbs.

The front porch of Langkawi Thean Hou Temple is supported by eight stout granite columns that are ornately carved with mytical dragons. The front façade is punctuated by a main door flanked by a pair of side doors. These are decorated with pairs of door gods.

The Langkawi Thean Hou Temple was built at a cost of RM8 million. It will become a venue for various cultural and festive celebration of the local Chinese community.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
