Church of Christ the King, Sungai Petani (11 August, 2015)
Church of Christ the King (GPS: 5.64981, 100.48966) is a Roman Catholic church in Sungai Petani, Kedah. The church is located along Jalan Kolam Air. It is next to St Theresa's Primary School, which was also established by the Roman Catholic mission.
The Church of Christ the King in Sungai Petani traces its history to the early part of the 20th century. The early converts were mostly Indian labourers working in the estates in the area. The first mass in Sungai Petani was said by Father Auve in 1915. It was held in a building across from the police station. The following year, Father Auve returned, not only to say mass, but also to look for a site to build a chapel.
Until a resident priest was appointed for Kedah, administration of the Catholic believers in the state was into two areas - Alor Setar and Sungai Petani coming under Father Louis Duvell of the Church of the Assumption in Penang, while the estates from Batu Belachan to Kelang Bharu under Father Auve of St Anthony's Church in Nibong Tebal.
A Catholic church building has been at Jalan Kolam Air from as early as 1934, when the area was under Father Riboud. The present church building dates to 1956, under Father L. Norris.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
