The Church of Christ the King in Sungai Petani traces its history to the early part of the 20th century. The early converts were mostly Indian labourers working in the estates in the area. The first mass in Sungai Petani was said by Father Auve in 1915. It was held in a building across from the police station. The following year, Father Auve returned, not only to say mass, but also to look for a site to build a chapel.
Until a resident priest was appointed for Kedah, administration of the Catholic believers in the state was into two areas - Alor Setar and Sungai Petani coming under Father Louis Duvell of the
Church of the Assumption in Penang, while the estates from Batu Belachan to Kelang Bharu under Father Auve of
St Anthony's Church in Nibong Tebal.
A Catholic church building has been at Jalan Kolam Air from as early as 1934, when the area was under Father Riboud. The present church building dates to 1956, under Father L. Norris.
