Jalan Tok Guru (Jalan Pengkalan Chepa), Kota Bharu

Jalan Tok Guru, Kota BharuJalan Tok Guru, Kota Bharu (30 April 2017)

Jalan Tok Guru is a major road in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. It connects downtown Kota Bharu to Pantai Sabak, a costal village in Jajahan Kota Bharu.

The road was formerly known as Jalan Pengkalan Chepa, but was renamed by the Kota Bharu Municipal Council to Jalan Tok Guru in 2011. A move that cause the local opposition party UMNO to question the motive, asking who was the "Tok Guru" the new name honours.1 The leader of the local UMNO Youth division, Mr Rosmadi Ismail, said that there is no basis for renaming a road that has been well known as Jalan Pengkalan Chepa for generations. He said that the action has a political motive to promote a certain political party or individual. If the person honoured were the Menteri Besar, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, then the road should be renamed Jalan Tok Guru Nik Aziz. However, it is usual practice to honour a statesman after the person has retired or passed away. Mr Rosmadi also claimed that the renaming was realised by the locals when the public noticed the roadsign has been changed.

Jalan Tok Guru starts in Kota Bharu, at the cross road with Jalan Kebun Sultan and Jalan Mahmood, across from Jalan Padang Garong. It ends at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, from where the road continues as Jalan Tok Guru.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
