Kampung Cina (GPS: 6.14177, 102.23422) is the earliest Chinese settlement in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. The inhabitants here are descendents of Chinese immigrants that settled there during the rule of Long Yunus between 1782 and 1795. They are mostly ethnic Hokkien from Fujian Province in southern China.
Kampung Cina comprises two sections: Kampung Kuala (Kampung Cina Dalam) and Kampung Sungei Keladi (Kampung Cina Luar). The Chinese community of Kampung Cina get along well with their host community, having assimilated some of the local customs and added loan words from Kelantanese Malay into their local Kelantan Hokkien. Nonetheless they enjoy the freedom to practise their own religion.
The most ornate Chinese temple in Kota Bharu is the Tin Hin Kong Temple in Kampung Cina.
In 1823, the Sultan of Kelantan appointed Gan Chu Li as the first Kapitan Cina of Kampung Cina Dalam and Wee Chai as that of Kampung Cina Luar.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
