Sultan Ismail Petra Arch, Kota Bharu (29 April, 2017)
Sultan Ismail Petra Arch (GPS: 6.13125, 102.23669), or
Pintu Gerbang Kota Sultan Ismail Petra, is a grand arch in the centre of
Kota Bharu,
Kelantan. Comprising a double gateway, it faces Jalan Sultanah Zainab, the main road through town. The arch was built in the 1990s, when Kota Bharu was designated a cultural city. The gateway leads to a parking area that was once the compound of the Kota Bharu Grand Palace (
Istana Balai Besar), where in the old days, bullfights were held.
The design of the Sultan Ismail Petra Arch replicates the palisaded gateway of the grand palace. Each gateway is flanked by three columns on each side. The lintel of the archway bears gilded inscriptions of Islamic calligraphy. The columns are embellished with floral motif. Standing at the centre, between the two gateways is a main column bearing the sculpture of a Koran.
