History of Ampang
Ampang is believed to be the initial site in Kuala Lumpur where tin was first mined. This happened in the late 1850's, when a group of Chinese labourers from Lukut were employed by Raja Abdullah and Raja Jumaat. They arrived by boat, disembarking by the bank of the
Klang River near its confluence with the
Gombak River. From there, they trekked to Ampang, where tin ore was in abundance.
The very name "Ampang" points to the township's mining past. It is synonymous with
empangan, the Malay word for dam, and refers to a time when rivers (most likely the Klang River) was dammed for mining purposes.
