Cheras Christian Cemetery (GPS: 3.1081, 101.73254) is the largest and one of the oldest cemeteries in Malaysia. Located about 9 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, the cemetery is home to some 22,000 burial plots.
The Cheras Christian Cemetery is said to date back to 1900. It is home to a good number of graves belonging to Commonwealth servicemen who perished in Malaya during the Second World War. This include prisoners-of-war who died at Pudu Jail and other places of incarceration. All together, there are some 156 such burials between 1939 to 1945. In addition, there is another 600 or so burials of non World War servicemen and dependents at the cemetery, including the children of Gurkha soldiers.
Burial continues to take place at the Cheras Christian Cemetery after the war. An article in
The Star in 2012 states that the cemetery was running out of burial plots, resulting in the illegal sale of plots, and undertakers taking bookings for plots and reselling them.
