Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka (GPS: 3.13416, 101.70361) is a government body established to uphold and develop Malay as the national language of
Malaysia. Originally called Balai Pustaka, it was founded on 22 June, 1956 in
Johor Bahru. A few months later, in September, it changed its name to Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka, with the abbreviation DBP, following the recommendation of the 3rd Malay Language and Literature Congress.
Since its founding, the DBP has moved a few times. It relocated to Kuala Lumpur in 1957, when it was based at Jalan Young. It moved to its present site on
Jalan Dewan Bahasa in 1962. The main building in the Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka complex is its highrise block, Menara DBP, which was completed in 2003.
