Jalan Chow Kit was named after Loke Chow Kit, a tin miner and revenue farmer who served as one of the pillars of the community. In partnership with Ho Kim Kee, Lim Chin Guan and Teh Seow Teng, he also established Chow Kit & Co., when became one of the largest businesses in Kuala Lumpur, in the late 19th and early 20th century. Messrs. Chow Kit & Co. was into various trades, from printing to tailoring and other activities.
Within the short length of some 600 feet of Jalan Chow Kit is one of the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur. It caters mostly to the working class shoppers. Alleyways off Jalan Chow Kit leads to the seedier part of Kuala Lumpur, with its inofficial red light district.
During the day as well as night, the road and adjacent Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman is busy with shoppers going to the market and at night, the night market or pasar malam.
Take the KL Monorail to the Chow Kit Monorail Station, located above Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. From the station, walk south along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman for a short distance to reach Jalan Chow Kit.
